How LinkedIn bold and italic text works

LinkedIn posts have no formatting options. The “bold” text you see in posts is made of Unicode mathematical letters, separate characters that happen to look bold or italic. That is why it survives copy and paste, and also why it has costs.

Use it sparingly: accessibility and search

  • Screen readers may read styled letters one by one, announce them as math symbols, or skip them.
  • Search doesn't match them: a bold product name won't show up when people search for it.
  • Keep it to a few words, like a heading or a key term. Never style a whole sentence, a link or a hashtag.

Write for the fold

LinkedIn shows about three lines before “…see more”. Put the news in the first line, leave a blank line, then the details. For product updates, start from the PR to LinkedIn post generator.

DevRelay does this for every release. DevRelay writes LinkedIn posts for your releases with the hook up front, in your voice, and posts them to your account after you approve. Start free.
FAQ

Questions about this tool.

01How do I make text bold on LinkedIn?

Select the words in this tool, click Bold, copy the post, and paste it into LinkedIn. The styled characters paste as they are.

02Where does LinkedIn cut the "see more"?

After about three lines, which is roughly 200 characters on desktop and fewer on mobile. It depends on screen width and line breaks, so treat the preview as a guide.

03What is the LinkedIn post character limit?

3,000 characters for a post.

04Is my text sent anywhere?

No. Formatting and the preview run in your browser.
