Product Hunt kit

A Product Hunt launch, drafted from what you actually shipped.

Pick a feature or your whole product and a date. DevRelay drafts the listing, the maker's first comment, the gallery, the thumbnail, launch-day posts and a runbook in your time zone, all within Product Hunt's rules. You approve and post.

Maker's first comment

Hi Product Hunt, I'm one of the people behind Tidydesk. We kept seeing small support teams answer customers at 3am because that's when the email arrived…

Launch week

A Product Hunt launch is a week of writing before the day even starts.

Tagline, description, first comment, gallery copy, posts, emails and a schedule, all due before 12:01 AM Pacific.

Rules you only learn by breaking them

Character limits, no vote asks, a maker account that's old enough. Miss one and the launch suffers.

Copy written from memory

The listing gets written the night before from what someone remembers the product does, not from what shipped.

Launch day is chaos

Nobody knows who posts what when, and comments sit unanswered while the team is asleep.

What's in the kit

Every piece the launch form and launch day ask for.

Each draft is grounded in your own pages and goes to your approval inbox like any other. On the DevRelay plan the gallery slides are rendered in your brand and our team can make the gallery's demo video.

Listing

Name, tagline, description, 1 to 3 tags, links and pricing, within Product Hunt's character limits.

First comment

The maker's comment for the moment you go live: who you are, the problem, what's different, and one question for feedback.

Gallery and thumbnail

Slides at 1270×760, the first one the social preview, and a 240×240 thumbnail made from your logo.

Launch-day posts

An X post and a LinkedIn post saying you're live, with your Product Hunt link.

Email and community blurbs

A few sentences for your own email to customers and for your Slack or Discord community.

Runbook

What to do when, from a week before to the results, in your time zone and on your calendar.

How it works

From a feature worth launching to a launch day that runs itself.

DevRelay drafts and checks. Your team approves and posts.

01

DevRelay tells you when a launch is worth it

When a released headline feature is the kind Product Hunt features (useful, new, well made, able to stand on its own), Today asks whether it's worth a launch. You can also plan one from any change, release or your whole product.
02

Pick a date

Any day from today up to 90 days ahead. Add an offer for the Product Hunt community if you have one, and DevRelay uses it word for word. If your last launch was within 6 months, the kit adds a note asking Product Hunt to allow a relaunch for a major update.
Tagline at most 60 characters, no emoji No vote asks anywhere No rank or badge you didn't enter Every claim from your own pages
03

Drafts checked against Product Hunt's rules

Every piece is checked for the listing's limits, never asks for upvotes, and never claims a rank or badge until you enter your results, and then only what you entered.

A person posts everything

Product Hunt has no API for launches, so you copy each approved piece into the launch form and post the comment and replies yourself. The launch-day X and LinkedIn posts can post from DevRelay on the DevRelay plan.
Launch day

A runbook on your calendar, in your time zone.

Product Hunt's day runs on Pacific time. The runbook works out when that is for you, puts each step on your calendar and lets you tick them off.

Through the day, paste a comment from your launch page and get a reply draft grounded in your docs, ready to approve and post.

FAQ

Questions about the Product Hunt kit.

01Does DevRelay submit the launch to Product Hunt?

No. Product Hunt has no API for launches. DevRelay drafts every piece and a person copies the approved versions into Product Hunt's launch form, and posts the first comment and replies.

02Will the posts ask people to upvote?

No. Product Hunt's rules don't allow it, so every draft asks people to visit, try the product and comment instead, and a check blocks any vote ask.

03Can I launch a feature, not the whole product?

Yes. The listing is under your product's name and leads with the feature. Plan it from the feature's change, release or launch page, or plan a launch of the product itself.

04What about the gallery video?

On the DevRelay plan, the kit includes a 30 to 45 second demo video script, and our team makes the video within 24 hours. It counts toward your 10 launch videos a month. You upload it to YouTube and paste the link in the gallery.

05Which plan do I need?

The text kit (listing, first comment, posts, blurbs, runbook, reply drafts) and the thumbnail are on the free plan. Rendered gallery slides, the demo video and posting to X and LinkedIn are on the DevRelay plan.

06Is DevRelay affiliated with Product Hunt?

No. DevRelay is an independent product that helps you prepare a launch. Product Hunt's own launch guide is the final word on its rules, and the runbook links to it.
