X character counter and thread splitter

How X counts characters

X doesn't count characters one by one. It weighs them:

• Links are always 23 characters, because X wraps every link in its t.co shortener. A 90-character docs URL costs 23.
• Latin letters, digits and common punctuation count as 1.
• Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters count as 2, so those posts fit about 140 characters.
• Each emoji counts as 2, including combined emoji like families and skin tones.

Paid X accounts can post much longer text, but long posts collapse behind “Show more” in the timeline, so the first 280 characters still do the work.

Writing a thread people finish

Put the whole point in the first post; most readers never open the thread. Give each post one idea, break at sentence ends rather than mid-thought, and end with the link. Numbering (“2/5”) tells readers how long the thread is, and this tool counts it within the limit.
